Trends in Immigration to Japan: The Growth of Foreign Residents

In recent years, the number of people relocating to Japan has been steadily increasing. Many immigrants come from Asian countries, supported by new visa systems such as the Specified Skilled Worker visa and the Highly Skilled Professional visa, which were introduced to address labor shortages. At the same time, international students seeking education and research opportunities in Japan have also grown in number, contributing fresh energy to Japanese society and local economies.

According to the Immigration Services Agency of Japan, the foreign resident population reached a record high of about 3.22 million in 2023. By nationality, the largest groups are from China, Vietnam, South Korea, and the Philippines. Notably, the Vietnamese community has seen rapid growth over the past decade.

However, challenges remain. The COVID-19 pandemic temporarily slowed immigration, and the depreciation of the yen has raised living costs for many foreign residents. Despite these issues, the Japanese government and local municipalities are expanding support systems to create a more welcoming and livable environment.

Key areas to watch in the coming years include:

  • Expansion of foreign worker acceptance to meet labor market needs
  • Support for students transitioning into the workforce
  • Programs to encourage settlement in regional areas

The increasing number of foreign residents highlights Japan’s ongoing globalization and diversification. Strengthening relocation services and providing practical support will play a vital role in helping newcomers integrate and build stable lives in Japan.
